Discover Vernal's Natural Beauty: Day Hikes & Family-Friendly Trails for Every Season

Vernal, Utah, often called "Dinoland," is more than just a gateway to prehistoric wonders. Nestled amidst breathtaking landscapes, it's also a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a gentle stroll with the family, Vernal's diverse terrain offers a trail for every adventure. And while there's something truly magical about hitting the trails when the aspens and cottonwoods begin to paint the canyons with strokes of gold and crimson in the autumn, these hikes offer stunning views and memorable experiences no matter when you visit.

Here’s a guide to some of the best day hikes and family-friendly trails around Vernal, Utah:

1. Dinosaur National Monument: Sound of Silence Trail

Difficulty: Moderate

Distance: Approximately 3.2 miles loop

Why we love it: This trail offers a deeper experience of the monument's dramatic landscape. It's a self-guided route with sweeping views of Split Mountain.

2. Red Fleet State Park: Dinosaur Trackway Trail

Difficulty: Moderate (due to uneven terrain and a scramble to the tracks)

Distance: 1.5 miles out-and-back

Why we love it: Step back in time on this incredible trail that leads to genuine dinosaur footprints preserved in sandstone! The hike itself offers scenic views of Red Fleet Reservoir and the surrounding red rock formations. It’s an unforgettable experience for kids and adults alike. Wear sturdy shoes, as the final descent to the tracks can be a bit slick.

Navigation: Downloadable maps and trail guides are available from the Utah State Parks website for Red Fleet. The trail is marked with brown posts and painted dinosaur tracks to help with navigation.

3. McConkie Ranch Petroglyph Trails

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Distance: Varies, with two main trails: the Main Panel Trail (less than a mile round trip) and the Three Kings Trail (about 1.5 miles round trip).  Why we love it: This unique site, located on private land with public access by donation, offers an up-close look at some of the best-preserved petroglyphs in Utah. The trails follow the base of cliffs and lead to hundreds of ancient rock carvings.

Navigating: Maps are available at the trailhead to help you navigate the various petroglyph panels. Since it's on private land, these on-site resources are your best guide.

4. Fantasy Canyon Trail

Difficulty: Easy

Distance: Less than 1 mile loop

Why we love it: This "otherworldly" landscape is a true hidden gem. Fantasy Canyon is a small, remote area filled with bizarre and intricate geological formations carved by wind and water. The trail is a short, easy loop that winds through the delicate sandstone figures, allowing for close-up exploration.

Navigating: A basic map is available at the trailhead kiosk. While the area is small and easy to navigate, it's crucial to stick to the marked trail to protect the fragile formations.

5. Moonshine Arch Trail

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Distance: Approximately 3 miles roundtrip

Why we love it: This popular trail leads to a magnificent natural sandstone arch, carved over millions of years. The path winds through a scenic canyon, making it an enjoyable hike for most skill levels. It's a fantastic spot for photography and a rewarding destination that feels like a true discovery.

Navigation: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) provides a downloadable PDF map on their website. For offline use, it's a good idea to download the map before you go, as cell service can be spotty in the area.
