Home of the Utah Field House of Natural History Museum and
the Dinosaur Gardens, Vernal is located on Hwy 40, 170 miles
east of Salt Lake City and 330 miles west of Denver. Famous
for its bigger-than-life pink dinosaur, Vernal is the county
seat of Uintah County. Centered between Flaming Gorge National
Recreation Area and the Dinosaur National Monument, the city
offers a variety of hotels, dining experiences and amenities
not usually found in a community of this size.
Self-guided, one-day tours of the
area explore Vernal’s downtown history, Dinosaur National
Monument, Steinaker and Red Fleet State Parks, and the petroglyphs
of Dry Fork’s McConkie Ranch. Major annual events include
the Outlaw Trail Theater and the Dinosaur Round-up Rodeo held
each July at Vernal’s Western Park Arena.

County: Duchesne Population:

Roosevelt, the largest city in Duchesne County, is located
on Hwy 40 halfway between Vernal and Duchesne 30 miles
southwest of Vernal; 30 miles northeast of Duchesne. Gateway
to the High Uintas Wilderness Area, the town of Roosevelt
sprang up almost overnight when the Ute Reservation was opened
to settlement in 1905. Today, the town is known for its western
heritage, green parks, and hometown hospitality. Major annual
events include the Northern Ute Pow Wow in July and the Uintah
Basin in Celebration festivities held in August.
The county seat of Duchesne County is Duchesne, located on
Hwy 40. Home to Starvation State Park, Duchesne hosts the
Annual Walleye Festival each September.
Lodging, restaurants, and other amenities can be found in
both Roosevelt and Duchesne, as well as in smaller communities
throughout Duchesne County. Self-guided, one-day tours of
the area explore Indian Canyon, Upper Stillwater Dam, and
the north fork of the Duchesne River.

County: Daggett Population:

Dutch John, the largest community in Daggett County, was founded
in 1957 by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to house officials
and construction workers engaged in the building of the Flaming
Gorge Dam. In 1998 Dutch John was privatized and is now home
to around 300 residents who work within the Flaming Gorge
National Recreation Area and Ashley National Forest.
Manila, located five miles from Lucerne Valley Bay, is the
county seat of Daggett County. Forest Service headquarters
for the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area are located
in Manila.
Both communities and nearby local resorts provide year-round
camping and RV sites, lodges, restaurants, and other amenities
to service visitors to Flaming Gorge Country. Self-guided,

Sheep Creek, Spirit Lake, and the Outlaw Country of Brown's
Park. Major annual events in the area include the Cow Country
Rodeo, Dinotrax Bike Festival, and the Labor Day Festival
of Lights.
