Species commonly hunted in the area include mule deer, elk, pronghorn antelope, pheasant, ducks, geese, sage grouse, forest grouse, and chukar. Local areas popular for big game hunting include Diamond Mountain northeast of Vernal and the Book Cliffs near the Colorado border, as well as surrounding BLM lands and the 100,000 acres that make up Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. In addition, Uintah and Duchesne Counties are rated among Utah's best hunting grounds for pheasant and sage grouse.
